An environmental group descended on a local pub earlier this month to help “green it up”.

Mark Shearer and his team at Project Dirt installed 30 energy saving lightbulbs at The Balham Bowls Club in Ramsden Road - where they regularly hold their “green” drinks.

“We meet in there for drinks every month, so it seemed silly not to try and green the place up,” said Mark.

The initiative was sponsored by lightbulb supplier, Megaman Ltd, who donated the low energy bulbs free of charge.

“It was so kind of Megaman to donate the bulbs for free. It wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for them, “ Mark added.

It has even inspired pub manager Alan Smith to think about turning the garden into a vegetable plot in the spring and encourage other pubs to follow suit.

“It’s important to do what you can for the environment. I’ve been talking with the guys at Project Dirt about the garden and it may be something we can do in the future.

“But for now the bulbs are working a treat. In the long run it will save us money as well as being environmentally friendly, so it wouldn’t be a bad idea for other pub landlords to think about going green too.”
