Wandsworth Town residents are up in arms after a pub near their home was granted planning permission to turn into a 24-hour hotel.

They say the proposal to convert the Alma Tavern in Old York Road into a 23-room boutique hotel will create more noise and traffic and is totally out of keeping with the rest of the area.

But despite more than 80 objections, the council accepted the request from Young’s Brewery, who own the site, at a planning meeting on February 11.

David Woodward, who lives on Alma Road, said: “This decision shows a complete lack of respect for local residents. The pub has enough difficulty policing noisy customers as it is. A 24-hour hotel will just make matters worse.”

Residents are also worried about parking in the area as, although it has been billed as a ‘car-less’ hotel because of its close proximity to Wandsworth Town station, there has been talk of spaces being created.

A council spokesman said:”We listened carefully to the views of local people on this application, but the committee are only permitted to take on board those objections which are relevant to planning laws and regulations.

"Having considered the matter vary carefully indeed, councillors approved the scheme by eight votes to one."
