A high-speed police chase through the streets of Upper Norwood ended when a car smashed into a lamppost and burst into flames.

The drama began when Bromley police attempted to stop a silver Vauxhall Astra in Crystal Palace Park Road at 4.15pm on Saturday.

The Astra was followed at high speed through Crystal Palace Parade and into Church Road.

Police say a passenger jumped from the car, before throwing away nearly £1,500 in cash.

The passenger was caught by police and the money recovered, but the Astra continued on its way, reaching speeds of 70mph in the 30mph zone.

It finally hit another car and a lamppost in Church Road before bursting into flames.

Officers managed to pull the driver clear and he suffered only minor injuries.

Police seized £600 from the driver.

The car was not stolen and no-one else was hurt in the incident.

Sergeant Philip Spaul, from Bromley police, said: "This incident took place in one of the busiest areas of the borough and would have attracted a lot of attention.

“We would like to hear from anyone in the area at the time who witnessed this serious incident where the lives of members of the public were put at risk.”

Anyone with information on the incident should call Bromley police on 020 8284 8859.
