5:34pm Monday 12th January 2009

One man has been released from custody and another is being held following a stabbing in South Wimbledon.

Police were called at 9.30pm on Saturday to Nelson Grove Road where they found a 17-year-old youth in the street suffering from stab wounds.

He was taken to a south London hospital where his condition is described as critical but stable.

Two 18-year-old men were arrested late on Saturday night on a bus in Wimbledon. The first was released on bail yesterday while the second was released but rearrested on Sunday afternoon. He remains in custody.

The incident is being investigated by Wimbledon CID.

DCI Steve Kibble said: "We are appealing for anyone who was in the area of Nelson Grove Road and the High Park Estate, south Wimbledon between 9.00 pm and 10.00 pm on Saturday 10 January. Did you see or hear anything suspicious?

"At this stage, we are keeping an open mind as to the motive for the attack; we have nothing to suggest it is gang related."

Anyone with information should call 020 8649 3039 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
