Dog banned from Lady Neville Recreation Ground after attacks

A dog that attacked a smaller dog twice is to be kept muzzled at all times and was banned from a local park, a court has ordered.

Dog owner Jackie Thomas, 65, of Holly Lane West, Banstead, heard in Reigate Magistrates’ Court yesterday that she needs to keep Jess, the three-year-old cross between a German shepherd and a Rottweiller under control.

She was also banned from walking Jess at the Lady Neville Recreation Ground.

The court heard how Jess attacked Beau, a bichon frise belonging to a 73-year-old lady of Banstead whose name was not mentioned in court, twice between January 5 and February 10, causing him horrific injuries.

Prosecutor Mrs Chucks Golding said: “The injuries to the other dog were treated by a veterinarian surgeon at the cost of £840 altogether.”

Mrs Thomas, representing herself said: “I can’t believe that she’s being considered a dangerous dog. If I thought there was a problem with Jess I wouldn’t let her play with my two grandchildren.”

Chairman of the bench Mr Philip Selby said: “We agree to make the order. The dog must be kept under proper control, be muzzled at all times and be excluded from using the Lady Neville Recreation Ground.”

The order was made under Section 2 of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.

Mrs Thomas did not want to comment on the magistrates’ decision.
