A banker and his two accomplices jailed for plotting to defraud Natwest of £10m are expected to finish the remainder of their sentences in Wandsworth prison.

Glaswegian Gary Mulgrew and fellow convicts David Bermingham and Giles Darby, admitted defrauding the bank in 2001 by persuading it to sell its stake in American energy company, Enron for £500,000 to another company they had a secret financial interest in.

That company then sold it back to Enron days later for £10m.

The trio, dubbed the Natwest Three, pocketed £3.5m and the rest was shared between disgraced Enron employees.

All three are now due to appear before a judge in New York next month where it is likely their applications to complete the rest of their three-year sentences back in the UK will be approved.

If it goes ahead, they are expected to walk free by the end of next year.
