Child asylum seekers cost Croydon £34m a year

Asylum seeking children in Croydon are costing the taxpayer £34m a year.

Croydon has 1,042 children in care, the highest in London. Of these 678 are unaccompanied asylum seekers.

The council says that it costs an average of £972 a week to look after an individual, compared with £866 a week for other London boroughs.

The council says the money from the Home Office and this grant covers the direct costs of supporting a child in care.

However, Steve Liddicott from the council’s department for children, young people and learners, said that it is the indirect costs such as education, housing and health which take a toll on council resources, although he admitted there was no way to estimate how much this was costing the borough.

In addition, because there is such a high demand for foster services in Croydon, many asylum seeking children are placed in private foster homes.

Mr Liddicott said this is one of the reasons that the cost of looking after children in care is more in Croydon than it is in other outer London boroughs.

A large majority of the unaccompanied children who claim asylum in Britain do so through Lunar House in Croydon. They are then referred to Croydon Council.

Croydon has an agreement with other London boroughs who share responsibility for children claiming asylum aged 16 to 17. Children under 16 are looked after by Croydon Council and, unless there is an adult willing to care for them, they are placed in foster care in and around Croydon.

One teenager who has been through the system is 17-year-old Muhammad Arabzad. He arrived in Britain from Afghanistan when he was just 14.

His family paid an agent to take him to safety after his life was threatened by a political opposition group. It can cost up to £8,000 to get smuggled into the UK.

Muhammad said: “I travelled for two months by road to get here. When I arrived I was scared and alone. I eventually bumped into an Afghan man who took me to the Home Office in Croydon.”

He was placed with an Afghan family in Croydon who fostered him.

He goes to school in Croydon and has become involved with a local karate group. He has been in England for almost four years and has no idea if his parents are alive and well. They, in turn, have no idea if their son arrived safely in the UK.

Well I mind it scoffer and so do a lot of others.

Of course if you are anti this sort of thing you are branded a racist etc.

I'm a great believer of charity beginning at home and when I see 'refugees' that have travelled thousands of miles - halfway around this earth to *benefit* from our charity it makes me spit.

I would wish that there were no such cases but the fact remains that those that are forced to send their children abroad will do so and someone needs to take responsibility for them.

It's not right that Croydon council should face extra costs and the Home Office should review the funding.

As a tax payer and Croydon resident I'm very proud of the service we provide and am more than willing to help fund it. Every penny spent on these 1,042 children is money well spent

...Muhammad said: “I travelled for two months by road to get here. When I arrived I was scared and alone. France is not a safe country is it ? As for dozyolTom... it's pretty much as I expected... she can't read beyond helping others no matter if the majority of these people are bogus!!

As for racists... it's NOT racist to be concerned about forking out brass for a problem that won't go away unless someone tackles the problem!! Wake up and smell the espresso - in Dino's opposite Allders!! rofl!!

Okay if you can't answer that question let's try another.

' it's NOT racist to be concerned about forking out brass for a problem that won't go away unless someone tackles the problem!! '

I'm continually 'forking out' for problems that won't go away. Cancer research , children in poverty , aid for the armed forces etc. How is this problem any different from those apart from the nationalities of the children involved ?

scoffer, Beckenham says...
5:27pm Wed 22 Oct 08

Forking out for charities is personal to each individual... forking out for those who have travelled for two months across many 'safe' countries - to reach the land of milk and honey... our little U.K. by stealth through council taxes is different... don't pay your council tax and you'll be sent to prison... a big difference OldnastyTom - even someone like you with a limited education should be able to grasp that!!

I say with send NastyOlTom red backside off on a fact finding mission to Afghanistan... to see how long it really takes by road back to gud old blighty... armed with her bible and her nastyTom Tom sat nav... she should be back for Christmas dinner!! Hope you like your stuffing well done!! rofl!!

NastyMrTom, Croydon says...
6:23pm Wed 22 Oct 08

Again you're not really answering the question. How the money is raised to tackle the problem isn't an issue. I believe it to be a problem for the state and have made it clear that Croydon Council shouldn't face undue burden What's in question is whether we have a responsibility to look after these children. I say we do because we're a civilised society made up of your often quoted 'honest , decent folk'.

You on the other don't want to take responsibility as you don't believe it to be your problem. You can try and pour scorn on their reasons for coming here. You can question whether we can afford to look after these children. You can even insult Muhammad by calling his story a lie but the bottom line is that you haven't got a shred of evidence to back this up and the only real issue is that they're not from our country.

If you're a racist then at least be a man and stand up for what you believe in rather than the worm that you are

as a tax payer and croydon resident i do mind. all the time this country keeps saying yes and letting people in, they will keep arriving. i am not proud this country deals out free meal tickets to all and sundry. there comes a time when the government needs to say NO, and that time is long gone. it has got to the stage where refugees etc get more than the british do in this country. they appear to have more rights as well. how much longer have we got to be treated like 2nd rate citizens?

I Watched a comedy programe last night in my hotel room... Sky 2 U.K.Border patrol or something - with the 'A team' NOT!! leading the way of rounding up illegal immigrants - A Nigerian guy completly fooled the U.K.B.A. by claiming that he would be murdered if returned home - with tears rolling down his cheeks sob!! and so the U.K.B.A. released him back onto the streets of London with a stern warning of 'no more working' and to report weekly for continued bail... he vanished into thin air - as predicted by the millions of fed up Britons watching this comedy team at work!!

No wonder we are the laughing stock of the modern world when allow this to happen... and as fer you oldTom it's not racist for honest, decent, law-abiding, folk to be concerned that this country cannot keep taking in the rest of the world!! The trouble with keep building more houses is that the money has to come from the tax-payers yes us!! even if central Government funded programes instead ol local councils for these newcomers needs - the money would be siphoned off from central Government coffers to fund this - we the taxpayers would end up paying for it!! Do you want this ? No nor do I!! looks like your out-voted yet again olmuttonheadTom!! You do realise Tom - you're on a losing wicket old girl!! because when it comes to this country slipping into a full blown recession - and a bit of cold weather creeping in like we have Oop north at the moment - those gas and leccy bills are gonna make people even more aware of why Britain cannot afford to keep funding the third world coming here... but you keep giving everyone a gud laff on here - I love seeing you make a complete fool of yerself!!

A great example of how racists lie and exploit to spread their evil

They'll tell you that others want 'uncontrolled immigration'. A complete lie and a totally ridiculous concept that no government would ever contemplate.

They'll tell you that all immigrants are cheats and liars coming to this country on the make. We all know this is rubbish and there is good and bad in everyone but it's in the racists interests to paint all immigrants in a bad light

They'll tell you that immigrants are destroying 'our Britain'. They're not and they've been a vital part of the growth and history of our country

They'll claim that there's no room and no money available. They'll use current global economic conditions to add weight to this to work on the fears of the uninformed. The facts are that most immigrants come here to find work and they're tax paying contributors to our society. The money spent on supporting those in need is a very small part of the fiscal budget and these people are very carefully vetted.

They'll try and exploit individual negative stories to convince you that this is the case with all immigrants. We had talk of 'rape gangs' in Bradford. These were all lies but once fear and loathing grows within a community the escalation into racist violence isn't far away as I'm afraid we saw.

They'll tell you that their views are held by the majority. That they represent 'honest , hard working and decent' individuals. If being those things equates to being a racist that would be true but these are the people that rose up and fought against fascism and racism in the past and they certainly deserve more than being tarred by the same evil brush.

They'll tell you that immigrants have more rights and have more benefits available than you or I. A total fallacy based on no fact whatsoever.

They'll tell you that the UK is a laughing stock around the world and looked on as a 'meal ticket'. We do have a reputation but it's for honesty , fairness and compassion. These are exploitable traits but they remain with us despite the actions of a few.

Don't allow the racists to represent you. Question what they say and don't let natural fears and worries cloud your thinking. Put yourself in the shoes of those we're trying to help and accept that things won't always run smoothly but that we are a strong enough nation to battle through adversity to achieve a noble goal. We are a proud nation and rightly so , don't let that pride be ruled by fear and represented by evil

Although I would much rather see more of this money going to pensioners living in shocking conditions without the money to even heat their homes through the winter, I think the immigration issue is in many ways overstated. My understanding is that when seeking asylum you must stop in the first safe country you find, but clearly the stories of how you will be looked after in the UK give an extra incentive to make the journey here above other countries.

These people come from countries where life is much harder and when they finally get here they are willing to take any job that will pay them a wage. While they are working, paying taxes and living a simple existence we have large groups of people pumping out children like factory lines to get on the benefits gravy train and whole families that have never had a job between them. Its sad, but these immigrants have a better work ethic than most Brits.

We are a proud nation and rightly so , don't let that pride be ruled by fear and represented by evil people hell bent in destroying everything we have - we are already the most overcrowed country in Europe!! yet, marxists want even more people to come here, causing even more havoc with an already overcrowded housing and schools programe - commonsense views are not racist views no matter how nastyoltom juggles her words around. loser!!

scoffer, you moron.

Most overcrowded country in Europe? Can you back this up? Do you think there are no immigrants in other European countries?

I do think we have a problem in this country (and in others) with immigration, but I hate the way you talk about other people in such an uncaring way. As long as you're ok, eh! How I wish people like Scoffer would one day find themselves in trouble through no fault of their own and would have to rely on other people's help. I bet they'd be the first to winge and whine. Have a bit of respect for people's fate. Complain to the government instead of letting your bitterness out on people who are only trying to better their lives. I would emigrate too if I had to.

'Overcrowded' is a term used to add weight to immigration limitations (or cessation if you're one of scoffer's lot)

The UK has one of the highest densities of population in Europe but that's as a result of our size , history and economic status not because we're flooded with immigrants.
The idea that there's no room and we should put a stop to newcomers arriving is as stupid as putting a limit on people migrating to London from other areas. It may well be densely populated but it has the fiscal and geographic ability to cope.
Poor management and investment may well have put a strain on resources needed by us all but that's a matter of poor government not out of control immigration.
It's the skill of the racist to put these two together

justine says he thinks there ia a problem with immigration in this country ? in what way is there a problem that you can see ? - please do explain - i'm half interested in what you have to say ?

I'm not uncaring towards anyone, and I respect everyone - that includes those that have opposite views to mine - allowing free speech is very important these days I think - something we fought long and hard to preserve in this country I might add.

Britain IS overcrowded... try googling the subject it's not a secret - or made up by anyone racist it's called FACTs!! oldnastytom is desperate to get her point across that there's enough room already - even though there's one in ten people in London waiting for a place for social housing and there are more people arriving than emmigrating ??

You can't get through to really stoopid people like nastyTom - she's like Mugabe... problems ? what problems ? Thank goodness people are seeing what's happening now in this country and are free to say in public what everyone is thinking!!

"justine says he thinks there ia a problem with immigration in this country ? in what way is there a problem that you can see ? - please do explain - i'm half interested in what you have to say ?"

The problem lies in how people like you react to immigration - seeing it as a threat. People feel that their jobs and livelyhoods and their way of life are threatened. I have sympathy to some extend. I believe people who come here from other countries need to respect and follow rules and traditions in this country. Most of them do, it's our government that is to blame for trying to please everyone at the same time, and we know that doesn't work.

Scoffer, you say you are not uncaring and you respect everyone. First of all, it seems you care more about yourself, rather than anyone else who may need caring about. Second, I don't think the kind of language you have used here is very respectful. You seem very angry. Not in a good way. You say you have fought for free speech, yet you don't seem to like listening to the views of others.

Oh, and googling subjects doesn't guarantee facts. You can google 'fairies' and it'll come up with something, not facts though.

One last point. How about all the Chavs living on benefit, having kids by different dads, getting tanked up on cheap cider? They were born here, their parents were born here. Don't you think they are a worse menace? Oh, maybe they'll emigrate to Benidorm like a lot of others and then the Spanish Scoffers can rant online like you do, and complain about the English immigrants.

Yes, people are free to say what they think, as you say. Including nastyTom. But you just don't like it.

I only pass sensible, direct, comments, towards a subject the marxist nastyolToms of this world would have us locked up for for daring to oppose uncontrolled mass immigration into a chaotic immigration system that already exsistss. We already know from well publicised sources that many asylum seekers are not fleeing for their lives because if they were they would stop and seek asylum in the first 'safe' country they reached - so it boils down to people coming here for a 'better life' to work - that means they are lying when they claim they are fleeing from persecution - how is that fair to the genuine one's then ? these poor people need help - and there are lot's of chancers cashing in on our goodwill and wrecking the whole system.

OlnastyTom has already said this Government has a well oiled laid out orgainsation that only allows in people who are carefully vetted ? Mmm... the failed bombers who tried to murder hundreds of travellers on the London underground went through this system of being allowed to stay in the U.K. ?

I tend to believe the many people who are now saying the immigration systen is in total, utter, chaos... we all know it is... it's not a crime to speak out against this... and when we see the comedy on T.V. of how even when we have a Government run U.K.B.A. dept catching those that should NOT be here legally - even then we are stumped because there is no more room in holding centres - they are all full up with people lodging appeal after appeal through tax payer lawyers using the silly human rights charter to keep them here!! We let them back onto the streets and they vanish!! No civiliased country should be operating like that - and I DO blame the Government - I also think it's healthy to discuss these problems amongst ourselves without resorting to hurling abuse like olnastyrTom has!!

We should also remember that foreign workers are being used unfairly to clean peoples houses, do the dirty jobs at rates below the minimum wage ? it's not fair!! And what about those third world countries who we are taking their doctors and nurses ?? how fair is that if we really care about the third world eh ? eh ? I'm afraid a lot of good, honest, folk are up in arms over this and it will be a subject to roll on and on and on!! We may as well just get used to it and stop this silly talk of racism!! The thing is we need to encourage WORKERS to Britain not people who are seeking handouts and Asylum refuge, if all the people seeking refuge and a breast to feed from in the world all came to Britain we would be sleeping standing up, people need to get their heads in order and the people defending them are mostly the immigrants themselves.

Muhammed´s forfathers did´nt die or suffer in the trenches of the Somme, mine did and yet our families are treated like immigrants, its a completely crazy Liberal leftwing upside down, topsy turvy loony system.

Lol , fair play to you Anne. It's a struggle to find a decent espresso in Croydon so you've got your work cut out. I like the Portuguese deli in St George's Walk , not exactly authentic but a decent price and a possible custard tart is a bonus. The major chains are too hit and miss and can't be bothered to do the small things that make a decent cup like wash the pipes through or heat the cup. I bought my own machine to get over this. Not cheap but it will pay for itself over a year if you're a regular drinker ....

The Sun undercover reporter gave this fraudster £500 and sure as anything he was able to pass the 'exam' (scoff!!) and hand over the document rubberstamped!! Why don't our MP's get out on the streets and find out what concerns people have ? I did notice Harriet Harman (Labour) has said they are closing Parliment down for a bumper 24 day Christmas Holiday!! the blighters only returned to work the first week of October - now they are telling us they need to rest their weary heads for 24 days in december!! 24 days holiday in December, not bad. Maybe you should become an MP scoffer, that way you'd be able to do something about the issues you care about, and have lots of holidays too. Then you could also get out on the streets and listen to people's concerns. Beats talking about it in coffee shops, you'd be able to actually do something about things. Mind you, there is the small problem of having to have people vote for you first...., Oh well, I suppose we'll have to put up with the guys that have been voted in or the guys that will be voted in next. You call yourself 'nasty' and you've behaved like that too ? I told you before - I can handle you very easily - the simple reason is your political views and points are like a leaky old farm yard bucket!! you compensate that by skirting around political issues and going on to personal attacks - that's fine, I can handle anything you've got - but you then realise you've got nowt left to offer - if you want a civilised discussion... be civil... if you want to rough it up and be nasty... fine. I've received nothing but insults and personal attacks from you ... but I didn't whinge and got on with giving some back. There's nothing worse than someone who loves to give it and can't take it ... what a sad old loser you are.

You haven't once provided any fact or evidence to back up your racist views. You're only source is 'honest , decent , hard working people' but that's just waffle added to make you look less of a bigot.

The fact you post on other forums means nothing to me.

I'd love a civil exchange of views and a clearly thought out argument but you're incapable. It's frothing at the mouth rubbish in every post. I'd normally give someone the benefit of common human decency but your nasty , ignorant and simply racist attitude doesn't allow for this.

The U.K.B.A. (Border Agency) has claimed millions of tax-payers cash in 'expenses' This organisation (or front!!) was brought in by this useless Government to locate, and remove people that should NOT be in the U.K. - sounds good on paper - but we are dealing with an organisation like the U.K.B.A. riddled with political correctness, human rights enforcement, and not having the guts to do the job they were supposed to do... ok, many of them are only following the rules put in place by this Government in the first place - which actually hamstrings them doing their jobs properley and swiftly... they become fed-up, lazy, it's just a 30k a year job doing basically nothing... the rot sets in, and we now see, they are spending hundreds of thousands of honest tax-payers cash on taxis, hotel-bills, e.t.c. - it's become a joke!!

We need to rehaul the U.K.B.A. - get out there and get on with your jobs!! - hard working, trustworthy, British tax-payers, are paying yet again for a weak Government run department NOT doing their jobs!! It's a scandal!! I'm writing to my MP to complain!! IOT!! rofl!!
