A mum has been charged with murdering her two children after they were found stabbed to death in their home.

Shanjayan Navaneethan, five, and his four-year-old sister Sharani were found with stab wounds at a house in Carshalton on May 30.

Magistrates heard how Mrs Navaneethan, 36, is now six months pregnant and is due to give birth before her trial at the Old Bailey on January 13.

Sasikala Navaneethan, 36, of Park Lane, Carshalton, who had an interpreter present, was remanded in custody by Sutton magistrates on Friday.

Mrs Navaneethan is alleged to have stabbed the children.

The Tamil family moved into their two-storey detached house in Park Lane, Carshalton, two years ago and ran a newsagents in Coulsdon.

Neighbours reported seeing the children, covered in blood, carried from the house late at night on May 30. Navaneethan and her 40-year-old husband were arrested. He was later released.

Despite being rushed to hospital, the children died within 15 minutes of each other shortly after arrival.

Mrs Navaneethan was detained under the Mental Health Act.
