9:30am Tuesday 3rd October 2000

A DRUNKEN 16-year-old girl assaulted a policewoman following a street fight with another teenager, Bromley Youth Court heard.

The tearaway punched the policewoman in the face as she was being arrested for drunk and disorderly behaviour in the early hours of September 8.

The officer had been called to the fight between two teenage girls in the High Street, Orpington, at 1.15am.

There was a crowd of people surrounding the brawling youngsters. The accused was on the ground and appeared to be drunk.

The police officer was assaulted on five occasions but eventually took the girl to Orpington police station where she was held overnight.

The defence said the accused was going through an unsettled period at the time.

He said: "She had been involved with a group of young people who were mixed up in criminal behaviour.

"My client also expressed her remorse and she realised the drinking was a problem."

The girl pleaded guilty to five charges of assaulting the officer and was ordered by the magistrate to complete a three-month rehabilitation programme and pay £50 compensation to the police officer.
