THE first council-run community cyber centre in Lewisham has opened its doors on the Winslade estate, in New Cross.
Eight computers, a printer and a photocopier have been installed in the former neighbourhood office, in Lovelinch Close.
Users will be able to use the internet free of charge, print documents and prepare CVs for employment.
Money has been made available from the New Deal Community Fund to finance taster sessions in website training around New Cross Gate, including the cyber centre.
Lewisham Mayor Councillor Dave Sullivan opened the centre and is leading the borough's push to get more people as possible using modern technology in everyday life.
Two years ago, 25 per cent of Lewisham borough's 243,000 population had internet access in some way or another. The figure in 2001 now stands at 42 per cent.
