Mum horrified after finding maggots in store's eggs

A mum was left horrified after she was covered in maggots while shopping for eggs.

Amy McGill started screaming after her hands were covered in the creatures as she picked up a pack of duck eggs at the Sunbury branch of Tesco.

"Then I saw these maggots had fallen out onto my hands, onto the shelf, and I just started screaming.”

Mrs McGill, who moved to Egham yesterday, had popped into the store in Staines Road West at around 6.30pm to pick up food to make a round of egg butties for her removal men.

But when she reached for the pack of duck eggs she was in for a rude surprise which left her shocked and distressed.

"It was absolutely disgusting. I picked up the duck eggs and noticed a horrible smell. I wish I could describe it, it was like mould. Then I saw these maggots had fallen out on to my hands, on to the shelf, and I just started screaming," she said.

While her mum and 10-month-old daughter, Poppy, waited in the car Mrs McGill said she was left to rely on another customer to provide a wipe for her to clean up.

"It was terrible the way the staff treated me. They didn't even give me anything to clean my hands with. A customer had to do that."

Despite her distress Mrs McGill managed to get her mobile to take photos of the larvae which littered the shelf.

A spokesman for the supermarket explained the eggs had probably been damaged a few hours earlier causing the infestation.

He said: "As soon as we were informed the store underwent a deep clean process and the affected aisle was cleaned up."

"The store has been thoroughly cleaned and customers can have every confidence when shopping there. This was a very unusual and isolated incident."

He added: "I apologise on behalf of the store for her (Mrs McGill's) distress."
