A couple, their young child and an elderly man escaped a fire at their Tooting home last night.

They had no smoke alarms, and only escaped when the older man smelt smoke while having his dinner in the front room.

He looked down the hall and saw the kitchen was alight.

Two fire engines were called to the terraced house in Maybury Street, close to St George's Hospital, at 9.30pm on Friday night.

The family were unharmed but Tooting fire brigade said 40 per cent of the ground floor of the house had suffered fire damage.

Firefighters said the fire started in the kitchen and they were not treating it as suspicious.
