Former Sun editor Kelvin Mackenzie is thinking of standing for election as an Elmbridge councillor.

The Weybridge resident says he is so sick of the treatment he is receiving from Elmbridge Council that he intends to stand as an independent candidate to "protect local voters from the corporate machine."

"I haven't had a 43 per cent pay rise recently and I doubt any other Elmbridge residents have."

His anger is based on parking charge hikes that are set to kick in from April 1 which will see the daily parking fee at train station car parks rise 43 per cent, from £3.50 to £5.

Mr MacKenzie contacted the Elmbridge Guardian after learning about the increases when he visited Weybridge station.

He has since dedicated his Sun column to the subject and said he wants to stand as a councillor in South Weybridge to "protect the consumer who is being taken for a ride."

"The council does not have a clue," he said. "They want us to get out of our cars and on to the trains and yet they push up the charges at stations by 43 per cent.

"I haven't had a 43 per cent pay rise recently and I doubt any other Elmbridge residents have.

"If I was to get elected I would protect the interests of residents, not councillors who vote in their own massive pay rises and pen-pushers who want to protect their final salary pensions."

Mr Mackenzie has until April 4 to declare if he is entering the election race, with residents voting on May 1.

I cannot believe anyone in Elmbridge would be so misguided as to even think about voting for the vermin that is Kelvin MacKenzie.

Seconded. I would be happy to campaign for a squirrel running against this sorry, bitter, twisted heartless excuse for a human being.

It is nothing short of tasteless to see a money-grubbing, attention-seeking creep try to speak for "the people", especially given his history of exploitation of said people. Hopefully the electorate in Elmbridge will see through his despicable persona and acknowledge this as nothing more than another publicity stunt.

Whatever Mackenzie's merits and demerits he has hit the nail on the head. He has always been a grassroots Tory himself. I hope he does stand against the smug and snooty conservatives of Weybridge and shakes Elmbridge up a bit.

I agree with Victor. Mackenzie tells it like it is. And a lot of people agree with him. Taylor wants to charge the earth for parking. Is this so he can sell off the borough car parks to his chums? Surely not...

How can anyone even consider giving this horrible human being this position?

The sooner he is fully exposed for the lying vermin that he is, the better for the people of Elmbridge.

Do they realise what a scumbag they have amongst them?

"Tells it like it is" does he? Mackenzie blithly admits he has no problem in printing lies in his awful rag. And you would be surprised at his opinion of the people who "agree with him" in that they actually read the awful thing. And do you think he'll treat the residents of Elmbridge any differently if they are so misguided and foolish as to elect him? Leopards and spots and all that type of thing.

Kelvin certainly has a point. How can this rise be justified? Elections in May, lets boot them out!
