A tagger has been jailed for spraying his girlfriend's name on trains and stations causing more than £30,000 of damage.

Raymond Agbegah, of Streatham, tagged depots in Streatham Hill and Strawberry Hill and railway stations at Streatham Hill, Streatham, Norbury and North Dulwich.

The unemployed 24-year-old went on a crime spree last October, vandalising the rail network in south London and the southern Home Counties.

British Transport Police officers were able to link Agbegah with the tags Emma' and I love Emma' after they established it was the name of his girlfriend.

He also used the tag milk', which he was previously convicted for using on the railways.

Sentencing him today, Judge Martin Beddoe said Agbegah was a persistent offender who was making his fifteenth court appearance and had 58 previous convictions.

"As you know and as I am sure has been said to you many times before, persistent graffiti is, at the very least, an expensive nuisance," he said.

"Such behaviour calls for a sentence of deterrence to persuade you and others who might be inclined to do so from indulging in this sort of behaviour.

"It is done for no better purpose than for your own satisfaction and self advertisement without regard to anyone else."

BTP Area Crime Unit PC Ian Garden said Agbegah was a prolific vandal who initially came to the court's attention 10 years ago.

"Vandalism is a senseless act. Agbegah foolishly risked his life to trespass on railway property to deface property for his own selfish pleasure," he said.

"His actions resulted in trains being taken out of service, so they could be cleaned, causing inconvenience to members of the public who use the railway system.

"I am pleased the court today has highlighted the seriousness of this offence by imposing a jail sentence."

Clearly the current system is working as a way of deterring repeat offenders...!

The softly softly attitude in this country simply isn't working. I'm sure that many people are horrified at ideas such as cutting a criminal's hand off, but I'm really starting to wander if this is the way we need to go.

I am amazed that someone can appear 15 times, be convicted 58 times and not already have been to prison. I wonder why the story does not reveal the length of sentence?

I think PC Garden has hit exactley the right note! These vandals are foolishly risking life and limb to scrawl on trains and the public pays for it, whether that be in time and inconvenience or through rising train fares.
A fair and great victory for the BTP!Welldone PC Garden!

Unemployed....what a surprise. He'll have plenty of time now to do some colouring in whilst banged up.

You think grafitti is bad here? Go and take a look in Budapest or Prague and see the ruination of two cities.

Hopefully Agbegah will be castrated whilst inside to prevent him procreating his type.

i wonder why the transport police do not mention the cost involved and how much money they waste bringing these trials to court. u gullible public praise these worhtless transport police for jailing a petty vandal but its not publicised how many gun charge, rapist and pedo's are not given "these measures". totally blown out of proportition. and those costs quoted are not the real costs merely inflated to "hollywoodise" the effect of graffiti

Vanal - It's not petty it is Criminal Damage. The relevent act has a specific power of arrest putting it on a par with Firearms, Sexual Offences and those involving Children and Young Persons.

If you care to write to the BTP under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act I'm sure they'll charge you a tenner so you can read the stats you require.
As for Criminal Dmanage being petty - imagine you come out and find one of these morons has written all over your property. The cost to remove, let alone replace or repair is high.

i'd like to see this POS sprayed with bright red, indelible ink, particularly around his face and genitals. i'd then like to invite anyone who's property or business was damaged by this half-wit to come help clean the little toe-rag using bleach and a brillo pads. form an orderly queue please.

You have to feel sorry for him. With a face like that, you can't be surprised that he acts like a sad berk.

Perhaps if he'd got a haircut, shave and maybe a job, instead of painting his silly nickname everywhere, this Emma might even have shacked up with him. But now that he's been dumb enough to get caught and banged up, she'll probably find somebody else by the time he gets out.

I personally think the sentence this vandal got was absolutely right, simply because the amount of convictions he holds under his name and is a repeat offender. It is kind of ridiculous having 58 convictions, the judge did right sentencing him for 2years, but their are other vandals out their who get a lot more than they deserve, I mean come on? graffiti artists getting sent to jail for doing graffiti on trains? that's just plain ridiculous, judges are asked to try and avoid sentencing people to jail because of prison overcrowding, but a lot of graffiti artists still seem to get it. Agbegah deserved it, people like him who are continuously re-offending deserve jail sentences. The government needs to invest in stronger security at the train depots, that's all it takes to stop vandals, but they woould rather have BTP GRAFFITI SQUAD who they pay out a lot of money to and have them doing full investigations, going to other countries trying to find vandals etc. Rather have police finding graffiti vandals than rapists, murderers who are out there in the world ruining people's life.

The system is messed up in this country. The Police just want to publicise all graffiti vandals who get convicted so they can show people that they are doing something.
