Update: Man killed in Raynes Park smash

A motorcyclist in his 40s has died after a collision under the railway bridge in Raynes Park on Friday.

Police said he was struck from behind by a Toyota people carrier before being hit by a lorry travelling in the opposite direction.

The incident occurred at about 5.45pm between Kingston Road and Worple Road.

An ambulance crew attended, but the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

A postmortem examination was due to take place at St George's Mortuary today, and police are awaiting formal identification.

The lorry was believed to be a road-cleaning vehicle.

A 52-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident, and has been bailed to return to a south London police station pending further enquiries.

I ride a SuzukiS V650S every day into central london and was really shocked and distressed to find out this poor chap died. It was even more so as I later found out my 8 year-old son was walking past at the time and heard the accident happen.

It sounds like he was unfortunately caught between a car and a road-cleaning lorry, and was left with no space to maneouvre.

May your soul rest in peace !

I'm not saying this is the case, but for me personally it only serves to highlight the fact that in London there are many car drivers out there that still do not look properly or see motorcyclists on the road. I for one can testify that the great majority of motorcyclists on the road observe the Highway Code and are generally always polite and courteous.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this time, as they try and struggle through this period of grief.

I work for the london borough of merton and i can through experience, feel how both drivers feel, as it happened to me in similar circumstances, i for one did not get behind the wheel of any vehicle for almost a year because i had the visions of the accident with me all the time... i feel so strongly for the family at this time and my heartfelt condolences are with them in this most distressing time.
Please take heart and beleive that things will get easier as time goes on.

I passed the incident (on my bike) just before 7pm that night. I am surprised the news report says 5.45pm as only 1 amblance was there, another was just arriving and the police was not seen on the coombe lane side.

I saw the bike lying on its right side.

I guessed what happened, as there is not much warning that there are traffic lights, around a tight bend before the lights...I dont like to speculate...

Only a few months ago, some idiot car driver hit me only a few hundred yards from that incident ! May I suggest that all readers get their driving checked by the IAM (www.iam.org)-

This is a tragedy. My heartfelt thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased. My brother was driving the lorry and is finding it very hard coping with this. Two years ago we lost our older brother when a car pulled out in front of his motorcyle. We know only too well the huge loss his family are going thru. The young lady driver had only just apssed her test and we asked that she not be prosecuted at the time as she did not mean it and no good would come from it. Only more pain and worry for her. Sometimes the guilt one goes thru is punishment enough.
