Siobhain McDonagh, the Labour MP for Mitcham and Morden, will be investigated by a Government watchdog following her £35,000 stationery bill.

Government figures released in October revealed that Ms McDonagh spent more on stationery and postage than any other MP, using £35,207 of pre-paid envelopes and spending another £13,900 on stationery during the last financial year.

She will now be investigated in a Parliamentary probe which will also look at other big spenders, including Liam Byrne and Margaret Hodge.

Ms McDonagh was also the biggest stationery spender in 2003/04 with a bill of £31,845 and came second in 2004/5 with £37,442.

She has held the Mitcham and Morden seat since 1997 and has a 12,560 majority.

At the time, a spokesman for the MP said the stationery had been used to contact constituents about significant local issues.

This included the potential closure of St Helier Hospital and the proposed Eastfields railway station in Mitcham, both of which have had successful outcomes.

"Siobhain sends out lots of letters to her constituents because she wants to be the hardest working MP that she can," he said.

"If she did not contact them, she feels she would not be doing her job properly."

I cant speak for the other MPs but I have had a lot of dealings with Siobhain and the reason she spends a lot on postage is that she does the job asked of her and looks after her constituants I have delt with her regarding problems with my business over the years and she has been nothing but helpfull and understanding so for gods sake leave her alone and let her do her job

I suppose the real issue here is whether Siobhain's massive stationery expenditure is because she needs to spend this much in order to respond to queries from constituents(which would be good; MPs should definitely be sorting residents' problems), or whether it's being used to send otherwise-party political propaganda. I'm sure the Parliamentary investigation will sort this out.

Quite right too. She uses expensive stationary. Why can't it be plain paper and envelopes? Plus how many staff/expensive machines are required to stuff the envelopes with the letters? Last I heard the population of Merton was approx. 200,000. Is this how many letters she sends out each time? This is just propaganda, meant to bolster her chance of re-election at the next election.

I am sure the Government Watchdog would spend far much money in investigationg this matter. Personally I think Siobhain does a great job for her constituents. She helped me with my immigration matter a couple of years ago and she had to write several letters both to the home office and to myself and my case is just one single matter.
Her surgery on Fridays is full of people with different matters that she would ultimately have to respond to.

All MPs do lots of work for their constituents - not all of them spend £35K on stationery alone, however.

I think it's quite right that she's investigated. If there's nothing to hide then at least we'll know we have a really hard-working MP. If there is something to hide then it needs to be sorted!
