Remembrance Day will be even more solemn next month after a thief dishonoured the fallen by plundering stones from Carshalton War Memorial.

Veterans may now suffer the indignity of laying wreaths at the dilapidated base of the cenotaph which has stood for 80 years in testament to the sacrifices of local servicemen.

Although Sutton Council is searching for replacement York stone slabs, it is not thought repairs - which may cost thousands of pounds - will be completed by November 11.

The desecration at Carshalton Ponds shocked community leaders and former soldiers who united this week in denouncing the culprit.

Bob Stoddart, 83, chairman of the Carshalton branch of the Royal Naval Association, said: "It is truly disgusting. I didn't believe people could stoop that low.

"When I was in school we looked up to the veterans of the First World War. If they catch the thief they should tie him to a mast, administer 50 lashes and then pour salt on him."

Councillor John Kennedy, chairman of the Carshalton and Clockhouse local committee, said the act had earned "the condemnation of all the people of this borough."

He added: "The memorial to the war dead of this town is to be treated with respect and the souls of those who sacrificed all they had should be left to rest in peace."

Detectives investigating the theft arrested a 22-year-old man at the site last Wednesday. He has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

The motive remains unclear but military monuments are increasingly being stolen by thieves who sell them as garden sculptures or for use in kitchen floors.

The value of the missing fine-grained sandstone slabs is underlined by the restoration problems facing Sutton Council.

A spokeswoman said: "We are trying hard to replace the stolen paving by Remembrance Day.

"However, it is difficult to source that particular type of high-quality genuine York stone paving, and we don't want to replace it with inappropriate material."

The sort of people who could do a thing like this, truly are the lowest of the low. Absolute scum.

This heinous crime against the community requires zero tolerance and the harshest punishment. The low lifes that perpotrate this have no right to remain in our community. I hope justice prevails although I don't suppose it will.

I can't believe people would do this. My Grandad was a Carshalton man, he fought for his country. He would be turning in his grave at what this people have done. I can't believe that people have no respect any more.

There are, as I am, many people who will be upset by this crime. The reasons do not need much explanation.; but the reappraisal of past endeavours, which includes those of our fallen heroes, has come to blight much of modern society. This is another sad event reflecting the ever decreasing value attached to our English (and British) heritage and history which was once taught and upheld in schools, churches, youth clubs, scout groups, etc. The "me" society is destroying our community at every turn and whoever carried out this act of severe and cruel vandalism is clearly a product of that society, as the stones are probably being sold on for profit. It is a society I have to live with, but one i detest living in.

I really do not think that the courts are able to issue the punishment that this scum deserves. Sometimes there is only one course of action that will have any effect.

Unbelievable, I sincerely hope that the Carshalton Police find the low life scum that would stoop to these depths

Why oh why do these scum bags have to do it now????
No doubt when the rest are caught it will be slap wrist time. I bet as an Ex Serviceman I received more of a punishment for a less trivial offence then this detrius will recieve (IF they ever get to court)

An insult to the men who went to fight, and I hope the low-lifes who did this rot in hell. But I doubt they even have a conscience, and I doubt the courts will do anything meaningful to them even if they are caught. Perhaps we should give them to some of our serving soldiers, I'm sur they would be interested in the scum who did this.
