Morden Park will not play host to its second music festival in two months amidst fears there would be "people defecating, exposing their genitals to young people and drug taking.”

Diynamic Festival was set to take place on September 8 but was met with backlash from neighbours and even a handful of brides-to-be.

Concerned residents and festival organisers MJMK put forward their cases for and against the event going ahead at a meeting on Monday.

Katie Heath-Whyte got engaged in December last year and decided to hold her wedding reception in the rectory garden of St Lawrence Church, which backs on to Morden Park.

She told the committee: “It wasn’t until June 30 that I became aware that an application was being submitted.

“At a time when most of our plans had been made for the wedding, this greatly upset me.

“At Eastern Electric, the noise was so much that even talking to each other became difficult.

“I was fully hoping to come into the garden and be pleasantly surprised but it was unbearable.”

The council’s licensing sub-committee spent nearly two hours deliberating on the outcome before deciding that the festival - which had already started selling tickets - would not be allowed to go ahead in Morden Park.

This news came as a relief to another bride-to-be, Lorna O’Donnell.

Months before there were any plans to host a music festival on September 8, she and her partner of 18 years, Anthony Stratford, booked their wedding at the Merton registry office which sits right opposite the park.

She was shocked that the festival was knocked back.

"I didn’t think we’d win this one," she said.

"When they announced the news I grabbed the arm of the person next to me.

"My first thought was ‘thank you Merton Council’ and my next thought was thanks to all the people in that room who put forward a brilliant case.

"Hopefully all we’ll hear now on the 8th is the sound of champagne corks.

"Every bride on the day will be doing cartwheels into the registry office."

Representatives from MGMK declined to comment on the outcome.
