A home near Belmont station will be demolished to make way for four five-bedroom houses.

Sutton Council’s planning committee debated the planning application at length on Wednesday night (August 8).

Concerns about an increase in traffic on a dangerous junction and the development changing the character of the area were raised by councillors.

The site, in Cheam ward, is now listed as 10 Northdown Road, but was previously 111 Burdon Lane.

A previous application for a block of flats on the site was turned down and some on the committee thought that this was the reason behind a change in address.

But Phillip Taylor, agent for applicant Alan Cooper, said: “This is not a nefarious means of trying to confuse local residents.

“Letters went out and there were a lot of objections which we have gone through all the comments in great detail.”

He added that it was a "logical thing" as the houses face Northdown Road, but three of the properties will still be accessed by Burford Road.

Some councillors also thought the development could increase traffic on the junction of Northdown Road and Belmont Rise (A217) where there have been accidents in the past.

The application was approved with five votes to four.

Councillors voted to include a condition that the houses cannot be changed into a house of multiple occupancy (HMO).
