Celebrities, such has Mary Berry, Monty Don and Alan Titchmarsh, are supporting a plan to transform an urban school into the UK’s first outdoor classroom.

Christ Church Primary school, in Battersea, are creating a 'wonderful wildlife haven where children can learn about biodiversity and the natural world'.

The school currently sits in the centre of tower blocks and many of the students have little access to green spaces. This project aims to add a little green to the urban school.

Work on the site will start in August, Head Teacher Colette Morris said: “It’s all about transformation, by transforming a rough, uneven piece of ground near the children’s playground, we are aiming to transform lives.

In the busy, built-up environment of central London, it is all too easy to forget the importance of our profound need to feel connected to the world around us. Our children need and deserve that relationship to nature. The children themselves came up with this great idea to raise awareness and money to support this important project.”

The children decided to hold top gardening experts for ransom and found some willing victims with Chelsea Flower Show gold winner, Cleve West, Gardeners’ World presenter, Joe Swift, and RHS top judge James Alexander-Sinclair.

The gardening celebrities played their role to perfection, starring in a YouTube film to highlight the school’s plight.

Cleve West said: “We had enormous fun with the children filming our held-for-ransom story. At the heart of this is a serious message about helping children to see beyond their urban environment. By supporting this initiative, it is my hope that we will nurture the natural talents of these wonderful young minds.”

The school aims to raise £50,000 for the project.
