Holby City star and musician Lee Mead, 36, will be taking the stage at the Epsom Playhouse this month. Ahead of his show, Lee spoke to the Epsom Guardian about his tour, music career and next phase of his career.

Ten years ago, Lee won the starring role of Joseph in the 2007 stage revival. It was an event that catapulted him into the public eye. To mark the anniversary, Lee has been on a year-long UK tour.

To go with the tour, Lee has also released a new album titled Lee Mead – 10 Year Anniversary, which came out earlier this year.

He said: “Lee Mead – 10 years – The Anniversary Tour is a different tour to most tours, it is over a year rather than over 3-4 months. Shows take places at the last weekend of each month. It is a reflection of the last 10 years of my career, but mainly a reflection on my music. Songs from the album are played as well as some older songs and more contemporary songs, such as a cover of John Legend.”

On Saturday, July 29, Lee will be parking his tour bus at the Epsom Playhouse. He described his excitement at playing there: “I am really excited to play at the playhouse, over the last 15 years I have played at over 200 venues and theatres. In this tour, we have a mix of venues I have played at but also several new venues.

“One of them is the playhouse, I have heard such great things about it and their love for theatre and music. I am looking forward to playing there! An evening of music there should be great, the excellent band have supported me throughout and I hope the audience enjoy the show.

“I have dusted off my multi-coloured coat for the first time in 10 years and it has been such great fun! There isn’t really a standout highlights so far, to be honest, I have loved every bit of it! Getting on the bus to a city, doing a sound check and then performing is always great.

“Because it’s the 10-year anniversary tour there have been so many great stories on the told bus over the last few years!”

Lee plays Ben ‘Lofty’ Chiltern on the Keller ward in Holby City, he returned to the show after spending some time acting on Casualty. He has had stage roles in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Legally Blonde, Wicked, West End Men and Joseph, all alongside his music. More recently he starred in Jack and the Beanstalk in his hometown of Southend.

Following his last show in November at his hometown in Southend, Lee will return to panto again. He said “I have 2 days off before rehearsals for panto – I will be I Aberdeen this year. I am contracted to Holby City until next September and will find out in the coming months if I will stay on.

"I will also be going on tour again next but rather than a musical tour it will be more based on my life and upbringing, where there will be interview opportunities. It would be hard to pick between acting theatre and music, I love it all! I really love music, playing in front of a live audience is great. I have started co-writing again and hopefully will release a new album in 2020."

Lee Mead plays at the Epsom Playhouse on Sunday, July 29. Tickets start from £23 with a booking fee. There is also an opportunity for a meet and greet before the show.
