Gareth Southgate’s inspiring campaign with England at the World Cup in Russia is being celebrated with an Underground station being renamed after him.

Southgate Tube station, in Enfield, north London, is now Gareth Southgate for the next 48 hours from today, Transport for London (TfL) has announced.

The Piccadilly line station will have its signs changed to display his name until the end of Tuesday this week.

Mark Wild, TfL's London Underground managing director, said: "The great performance of the England team this summer brought people of all ages together in celebration.

"We're delighted to be able to show our appreciation to Gareth and the team by renaming the station in his honour.

"This is another great example of how we, and brands, can work creatively together."

The former Crystal Palace defender, who spent seven years at Selhurst Park from 1988 to 1995, guided the Three Lions to a fourth-place finish in Russia.

It’s the furthest the men’s national team have been in the major international tournament for 28 years since 1990.

TfL made the move this morning on July 16 and the station will revert to its original name at the end of tomorrow (July 17).
