Tributes have been paid to a former Wandsworth councillor Liz Stokes who has passed away.

Mrs Stokes served as councillor for West Putney ward between 2006 and 2016 and during her time at the town hall served on the education overview and scrutiny committee, the licensing sub-committee and standards committee.

She was a graduate of Bristol University and a successful lawyer who rose through the profession to be appointed as a judge.

A keen supporter of the arts, and it was at a theatre that she met her husband David. She was also a proud and active member of amateur dramatic company the Old Stagers, the oldest surviving theatrical society of its kind in the world.

Liz also played a role in her community, she was a school governor, a keen supporter of Battersea Arts Centre and actively involved for many years with The Samaritans.

Cllr Govindia, leader of Wandsworth council said: “Liz Stokes was a popular, hardworking and dedicated councillor whose whole career was dedicated to public service.

“She served the people of West Putney with distinction and with great passion and understanding and through her background as a judge she always sought justice and fairness for her constituents. She will be sorely missed by all those who knew her.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family.”
