An autism support group has been nominated for a National Diversity Award in recognition of its support for young people.
Express CIC, a Kingston based community group, was set up by local mums Annette Williams and Tracey Gaggiotti in 2012. The services are run entirely on a voluntary basis. The group provide therapy for children and young people, support groups and counselling for parents and host run awareness raising events.
The group has been nominated in the National Diversity Award category of community organisations that support people with disabilities.
Since they were established, the group has supported hundreds of young people with autism and their families. Tracey Gaggiotti said: “We are excited and proud to have received this nomination. It means so much to us that local people recognise the value of the services we provide for young people with autism in the borough.”
One local parent said: "Tracey and Annette work tirelessly to engage, inform and connect those with autism and their families.” Another said the group is "an essential resource for local families, they have made a real difference to our situation and we are very grateful for their hard work."
The awards celebrate the achievements of grass-root communities in the UK who tackle challenging issues in today’s society. They have attracted a growing list of high-profile supporters including Sir Lenny Henry, Katie Piper and Olympic diver Tom Daley.
Shortlisted organisations will attend the awards ceremony at Liverpool Cathedral in September.
