The owner of a Michelin star restaurant has been recognised by the Institute of Hospitality for his outstanding contribution to the industry.

Enam Ali MBE opened Le Raj on Fir Tree Road, Epsom, 27 years ago. He wanted to ‘show the world the true heights that spice cuisine can reach’. He won the Outstanding Contribution awards as the Institute recognised what he has done for the industry.

Mr Ali established numerous trade associations, published the curry industries first publication, founded the British Curry Awards and established a training restaurant at Nescot College.

The academy has been operating for a year now and will welcoming apprentices in the new academic year. Mr Ali said: “I am extremely happy to see my achievements recognised. When I opened the restaurant, I didn’t want to establish a traditional curry house.

“We wanted to change the style and I believe we have done this. The contribution made is unmatched. I have lived in Epsom for many years, my family are from here and that is why it was chosen.”

Mr Ali also won Awards Professional of the Year in April at the Conference &Incentive Travel Awards Awards 2018. And Le Raj was also chosen by Mercedes Benz as the set for their recent TV advert, which coincided with the launch of their showroom in Kiln Lane.

The Institute of Hospitality is celebrating its 80th year. They offer professional development opportunities to members and promote across the industry through awards, training and qualifications.
