Thermal technology is to be used to repair potholes in Croydon’s roads, following successful trials on 10 streets in Shirley, Coulsdon, Purley and Kenley. The council says the technology speeds up repair times by up to 40 per cent. as it enables contractors to heat up the existing damaged road until it is soft enough to be reshaped as a partial filling for the pothole. Time is saved by not needing to take away old material or source new material. Croydon Council says the trial saved nearly £2,000. Cllr Stuart King, cabinet member for transportation, environment and regeneration, said: “This cutting-edge technology has already had a significant impact with more potholes filled in a shorter time. “Thousands of journeys are made on our roads every day and we will do anything we can to keep the borough moving. “Using a mix of the greener, more cost effective technology together with traditional means allows our contractors to quickly fix potholes using the most appropriate methods.”
