Thought to be the oldest cricket ground in the world, the Mitcham Green is at risk of being redeveloped out of existence.

Members of the Mitcham Cricket Club have been in a decade long battle with Phoenix Investments Ltd since it purchased the freehold of the pavilion, an unused nearby carpark and a Grade II listed pub a decade ago.

Mitcham's secretary and ladies captain, Julia Gault, says since that purchase, Phoenix has been preventing the club from accessing much needed funding or develop the facilities at the 333-year-old ground.

"We want to be a proper part of the community, but they (Phoenix) are trying to take that away from us," Ms Gault told the Wimbledon Guardian.

"We're important in the history of cricket and we want to be able to develop our club.

"They have refused to answer any of our letters for the past three years.

"They have reneged on agreements made in previous meetings and they have not consulted with us about any plans for redevelopment."

Ms Gault believes Phoenix wants the club to cease to exist so it can redevelop the green entirely.

The latest threat to the club comes after it was announced that the investment company would be holding a consultation on Monday, June 25, to potentially discuss the building of a hotel.

But Ms Gault said the club were never formally notified of the meeting.

"They didn’t have the courtesy of inviting us to the consultation." the secretary said.

"We have played nice for the last ten years but we have had enough."

What the club wants is clear, to receive an updated version of the lease so that members know where they stand, and to be formally recognised by Phoenix so that the history of the green can live on.

"Given Phoenix's lack of contact, their unwillingness to accept our rights to stay in our historic pavilion and their total mismanagement of the site, any new planning permission must include the transfer of ownership of the pavilion to allow year-round community use.

"We want to save our club and continue 333 years of cricket on the green."

A Gofundme page has been set up to help raise money to assist the club in any transfer of ownership, which can be seen here.

The club is also asking people to turn up to the consultation in their cricket whites to show support for the club.

The meeting is being held on June 25 at Vestry Hall, Cricket Green and will run from 6pm to 8pm.

Phoenix have not yet responded to a request for comment.
