Pictures taken in Richmond Park have won The Royal Parks’ photo competition.

One of the shots, taken by Bartek Olszewski, was an action shot of a stag scooping up bracken. The image won the best nature image beating 350 entries.

All the submissions were by amateur photographers via Facebook and captured life in The Royal Parks. The competition was split into four categories: nature, people, events and history & heritage.

The judging panel was made of judges from The Royal Park, BBC Wildlife Magazine, Serpentine Gallery and design agency.

Judge Sheena Harvey, editor of BBC Wildlife Magazine said: "This is a striking and evocative image of a rutting stag scooping bracken into its antlers to look larger and more dominant.

“Having observed the activity, the photographer must have carefully chosen an angle for the shot that would encompass the animal’s entire profile as well as the arc of scattered leaves and snow.

"The sweeping motion is caught in such a way as to convey the power of the head toss, and you can almost hear the rustle of leaves and twigs as they settle."

A humorous take on the wildlife living in Richmond Park’s Pen Ponds was the winning choice for the ‘People’ category, submitted by Steve Brenman and judged by Joseph Constable, Assistant Curator at The Serpentine Gallery."

The ‘Events’ winning photo captured a dramatic view of the Ride London event by Ingrid Demaerschalk, portraying a queue of cyclists winding their way through Richmond Park. The category was judged by Mark Laing, Photographer at Greywolf Studios.

Simon Richards, Head of Parks Operations at The Royal Parks, said: “It’s no surprise that the Royal Parks are among the most snapped locations in the capital, providing the backdrop to the city’s magnificent cultural and natural heritage.

“We hope the competition will inspire others to discover and enjoy their parks - and maybe take a few photos themselves!”

The winning photos will be on display at The Royal Parks Showcase event, to be held in Hyde Park between Tuesday July 10 and Thursday July 12 from 10am.
