Two Wandsworth mums completed an ultra- marathon in just 21 hours to raise money for a primary school.

Victoria Boxall-Hunt, 47, and Tracey Barnes, 42, completed the 100km ‘London 2 Brighton Challenge’ to raise more than £10,000 for Floreat Primary School, Garratt Lane.

They began at 6:30am on Saturday, May 26 in Richmond Park and through a combination of running, walking and ‘shuffling’, the pair finished in Brighton at 3:28am on the morning of Sunday, May 27.

Victoria said: “It was a life changing, life affirming moment. We were supported by our amazing husbands, who met us at every rest stop and fed and looked after us. Our kids and parents were there at some too.

“We had surprise visitors along the route and so many messages from our friends and family that kept us going. It really felt like we were all in it together.”

During the marathon, the mums battled hot, humid weather as well as Victoria, a group operations director at MARCOL, head butting a low branch just before the 56k rest stop.

The track provided its own difficulties as it became very narrow and covered with mud, brambles and stingers.

It began raining at the 80k mark which challenged the runners, with many participants pulling out at the rest stop as it became dark and wet.

Climbing over the South Downs at Plumpton proved tough for the mums and was made harder by the rain and thunderstorm.

The pair found the final part of the marathon between 88k and 100k mentally brutal but were certain they could finish. Before the race, they hoped to finish before midnight but after finding out how diverse the course was knew this was probably unrealistic.

Summing up the experience, Victoria said: “A magnificent journey-never to be repeated!”

The money will be handed to the Friends of Floreat and will be used to provide school resources. Victoria and Tracey both have children who attend the school.
