Adverse weather conditions affected parts of Sutton over the bank holiday weekend as London was hit by the ‘mother of all thunderstorms’.

Images published online show flooded streets in areas of the borough, as well as lightning strikes over North Cheam, this week.

Ed Hurley published a 55-second clip on Facebook on May 27 with the video showing motorists driving through the rain amid the lightning.

One user said: “It’s weird, scary and amazing all at the same time. Very war of the worlds.

“HG Wells would of [sic] been proud.”

Another commented that it was ‘amazing’ before a third added that it was a ‘shame’ the lightning missed the derelict Victoria House, on the corners of London Road and Malden Road.

The Met Office issued a yellow warning alert for thundery rain or showers, prompting risks of flooding in parts of southern England and Wales on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Forecasters believe there is a ‘small chance’ homes and businesses could be flooded, or struck by lightning, and buildings could be damaged.

A Met Office spokeswoman said: “It's fairly normal weather for us to see thunderstorms through the summer months as temperatures warm up.

“Thunderstorms are caused by the warmer air.”

Rob Ashby captioned his image as ‘the River Cheam’ in his post on the Cheam Life Facebook page as more rain fell in Sutton this week.

Meanwhile another social media user, who wishes to remain anonymous, captured a flooded road under the Worcester Park railway bridge.

The Met Office predicts thunderstorms to likely affect southern parts of the UK both Thursday and Friday, May 31 and June 1, this week.

A yellow warning for rain has again been issued while the capital recovers from a tough few days after the effects of the bank holiday weather.
