The second-ever Great Mortlake Bake Off has been a tasty success.

Enthusiastic bakers from across Richmond gathered at St Mary the Virgin Church on May 12 to submit their entries.

The cake categories were: showstopper, chocolate, sponge, secondary school, and primary school.

Non-bakers, such as self-confessed "hopeless" baker MP Zac Goldsmith, admired the beautiful display of entries and were offered tea and - perhaps unsurprisingly - cake.

By 2pm, when judges from local businesses arrived to begin sampling, tables were groaning under the weight of 59 varied bakes from across the borough.

Judges included chef owners of ‘Crowthers Catering’, restaurant critic Margaret Bemand and Food Technology teachers from the schools Richmond Park Academy and Christ’s School.

Two of the five categories were for schoolchildren, with local primary school entries making up over a third of all submissions; the number of secondary school entrants has doubled since last year’s event.

Children and adult bakers alike watched with bated breath as the ten expert judges meticulously sampled and marked each bake for taste, texture and appearance.

For those who needed a distraction from the excitement, there were demonstrations from local experts.

Tricks of the trade were shared by Jackson Fiorini, chef and owner of Mortlake restaurant, The Tapestry, who received a round of applause when he swiftly created dishes for the audience to share, including his restaurant’s delicious signature dish paella and an Eton Mess (made with enthusiastic audience participation).

Teenage ‘Bake Off Ambassadors’ helped smaller children decorate biscuits with an array of tempting toppings in a dedicated area.

Winners included Indi Aernouts (Primary), Ariana Mokarrami (Secondary), Rebecca Pass (Sponge), Oxford House (Chocolate) and Jessica Parsonson (Showstopper).

Prizes were donated by local independent family businesses who have contributed for years to the community feel of Sheen and Mortlake.

These include gifts from Lucy Loves, WUBL Water, Valentina Delicatessen, Classic Collections, Sheen Sports and Sandrine’s Chocolates and voucher prizes for children from Rocks Lane (holiday football/tennis sessions), A Party Palace, Bella Del Gelato ice cream parlour, Pandemonium toys/games emporium and Sheen Bookshop.

Grown-up winners received vouchers from cake boutique Madeleine’s and delicious meal vouchers from Pickle & Rye, Lupo Bros, Hare & Hounds; and just in case anyone wanted to get their hair done before they went out to eat – there were also hairdressing vouchers from salons Sugar and Millers.

The prizes were awarded by Zac Goldsmith.

The £500 profit from the event was donated evenly between local charities Missing People and Mortlake Community Association.
