It has been music to the ears of Caterham Valley shoppers for nearly two months, but the colourful piano outside Morrisons has now been "damaged beyond repair."

Hundreds of people have been tinkling the ivories ever since the piano appeared overnight in Church Walk and the community is on the lookout for a replacement.

Andy Parr was "instrumental" in bringing the piano to the town in the first place and the vice-chairman of Soper Hall believes a replacement must be found as soon as possible.

“The piano has been a huge hit with visitors to Caterham Valley and we were hoping to find a replacement soon which will add to the festival atmosphere of the town during the summer months,” he said.

As well as plenty of renditions of 'Chopsticks’ and `Happy Birthday’, there have been some performances that ave really stuck in people's minds.

Nine-year-old Theo James, from Gresham Primary School, wowed onlookers with his performance of a John Legend favourite while Old Coulsdon resident and musician, Nathan Johns, drove into town specifically to play his own song `Giving Up’ to the delight of passers-by.

Now the race is on to find a replacement piano which can be decorated in time for the town’s Summer Vibes initiative which starts on June 1 – a two-month long celebration of the community.

If anyone has a secondhand upright piano they can donate so that it can be painted for the Summer Vibes initiative, you are asked to contact Caterham Valley For You Facebook page or email Sue@caterhambid.co.uk
