A Putney born heavyweight boxer is set to make history in his next fight.

Joe Joyce will be challenging for the Commonwealth Heavyweight Title, making him the first boxer to fight for the title in their fourth professional fight.

He will be fighting Jamaican Lenroy Thomas on the undercard of the Tony Bellew vs David Haye rematch on Saturday, May 5 at The O2 Arena, Greenwich.

To Joe, this is just another fight, stating: “I am laid back and then I get to the ring and it’s an explosion.”

To prepare for the fight, Joyce has been training at his promoter David Haye’s gym in Vauxhall with his renowned trainer Ismael Salas which has included sparring with southpaw boxers in preparation for Thomas, who adopts a southpaw stance.

He has never fought on a stage as big as the O2 Arena in his professional career, previously fighting at York Hall, Bethnal Green and at the Indigo, at the O2.

Previously studying Fine Art at the University of Middlesex, Joe entered the sport late at the age of 22.

Joyce, who currently lives in Clapham Common, only turned professional with Hayemaker Promotions in 2017, after winning various amateur medals including a silver medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016.

In the last few months Joyce has visited his old stomping ground, taking his medals and sharing his experiences with pupils at his former school Elliot School now known as Ark Academy in Putney.

He has one week left of solid training before fight week, where he will take part in the final press conference, media workout and weigh in.

The fight will be on Saturday, May 5 and can be seen on Sky Sports Box Office.
