The secondary school proposed for the Stag Brewery site in Mortlake would be an academy, the Department of Education announced today (April 23).

The provider chosen for the 900-capacity sixth form school is the Aspirations Academies Trust, which is responsible for 14 other academies in England, mostly located in London.

Subject to planning permission, the Livingstone Academy West London, a school originally earmarked for east London, will set up on the site.

The school would be named after and in open partnership with fantasy author and entrepreneur Ian Livingstone CBE, who co-founded company Games Workshop.

Co-founders of the Aspirations Academies Trust, Paula and Steve Kenning, said they were “very excited” to be given the opportunity.

In a statement they said: “The vision for the school is to provide a high quality engaging and challenging education that provides not only high-level qualifications at GCSE and A level but also fully develops the skills young people need for success in this rapidly changing world.”

Ian Livingstone CBE said he was “delighted”, adding: “In a world being transformed by technology, our vision is to help children think critically, creatively and computationally as well as achieve high grades in their qualifications, giving the students the skills to be job makers as well as job seekers.”

Robert Henderson, the council’s director of children’s services, praised the school’s “very successful track record”.

He said: “Over the next few months I look forward to working with them to further develop their plans.”
