Residents are invited to the rededication of the Avenue of Remembrance in Cobham, following Elmbridge Council’s work to replace the cherry trees.
The avenue and its original 44 trees were dedicated in 1946 by Cobham Women’s Institute to honour the memory of local soldiers who died in the Second World War.
Since then, some of the trees have become diseased and in a consultation in September 2017, 96 per cent of 230 respondents indicated they wanted the avenue renewed to protect it for the future.
New trees were planted on February 14.
The ceremony on Sunday, April 8, has been timed so those attending should see the trees come into blossom.
Councillor Janet Turner, portfolio holder for leisure and culture, said: “The council is very proud to have been involved in the restoration of this much-admired landmark in Cobham.
“We have had tremendous support from local groups and this project is really the result of their ongoing commitment and dedication to give local soldiers a fitting memorial as well as a wonderful space for residents to enjoy for many generations to come.”
The ceremony will be held at the Avenue of Remembrance, in Tilt Road, Cobham, on Sunday, April 8, at 12.30pm.
