Croydon Police has warned of "significant disruption" after a collision between a car and an energy plant caused a gas leak last night.

The A23 Purley Way between Fiveways and Lombard Road remains closed both ways after the crash occured on Whitestone Way.

Emergency services remain at the scene and cordons have been widened to 250 metres this morning.

Several nearby homes have also been evacuated as a precaution.

Croydon Council is working with the emergency services to provide temporary rest centres for people who have had to leave their homes.

So far, no injuries have been reported.

Tram services have also been affected this morning. A Council spokesperson said: "There is currently no London trams service between Therapia Lane and Wandle Park and between Mitcham Junction and Reeves Corner."

Travellers are advised to check the Croydon Council website for updates.

Gas company SGN has put out a statement saying that the gas leak has now been stopped.

"Once our repair is complete, we will need to carry out further safety checks in New South Quarter area before excavated residents are able to return to their properties," SGN said.

"We appreciate it’s not easy being evacuated from your home and we’re working closely with the emergency services and Croydon Council to get everyone back home as soon as it’s safe to do so.

"We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while we repair our damaged gas network."
