An established filmmaker who grew up in Sheen has embarked on an exciting new project with a documentary about three Michael Jackson impersonators.

‘Moonwalkers’, by Tom Goudsmit, follows the lives of three struggling performers on their journey to Hollywood as they dare to follow their dreams of fame and fortune.

Tom, who also works part-time making documentaries for The Guardian, said his fascination with Michael Jackson began from a young age and he went along to the unveiling of his wax figurine at Madam Tussauds.

He said: “I’m in my late thirties so I grew up in the 80s and 90s and Michael Jackson was everywhere. I was a fan, I went to Madame Tussauds and I remember him jumping on the car and dancing.

“His music videos were like events. There would be a huge feature on BBC or MTV because then they were really expensive music videos. He was quite a pioneer in film.

“His music has permeated our culture. Michael Jackson is the biggest star, he probably will be for a long time."

Tom met the tribute artists – Chavail, 24, Quintin, 28, and Malachi, 29 – by chance when he was working on another project.

He said: "I was fascinated. I wanted to know what their story was, why were they here in San Francisco dancing to Michael Jackson?

"They were loving the music and the dancing and there was a real fraternity between the guys."

Each of the artists represent a different Michael Jackson era: Chavail is his Motown period (1970s) Quintin is 'Thriller' (1980s) and Malachi is 'Bad' (1990s).

A fundraising campaign has now been launched to make the documentary, which has already been filmed but needs editing, a reality.

The kickstarter has been live since March 1 and at the time of writing has £3,895 pledged of the £28,000 goal.

The kickstarter ensures that people only have to pay-up if the target is reached and project is successful.

"A lot of people have dreams, a lot of people grow up wanting to be a singer or a dancer or an actor and then other things get in the way and then they regret it," added Tom.

"These guys, although they are not well-off, they won't have any regrets because they dared to achieve their dreams."
