Council tax is on the rise in Croydon.

Ahead of a meeting to be held next Monday (February 26), Croydon Council has revealed that householders will be paying just more than 5% extra on their bill for the next financial year.

Depending on which band you fall under, you could be paying anywhere from £1 to £3 extra per week.

Leader of the Council, Tony Newman, said funding towards adult social care to look after the elderly and vulnerable would be one area this additional money would be put towards.

"People are living longer lives but pressures on looking after older people continue to grow," he said.

"That money enables us to keep services and not make cuts."

People living in band D can expect to pay an extra £78.03 per year as the Croydon Council tax increases by 2.99%, the adult care social levy increases by 2% and there is a 5.07% rise for money going towards the Greater London Assembly.

Mr Newman said that although nobody liked to see a tax rise, it was necessary.

"I do recognise it's more than some people would like, " he said.

"I do recognise that for many people on lower incomes it is still a big bill.

"The balance is to keep it low, but high enough to not have to cut services."

Here is a breakdown of how much you will be paying each year compared to last, depending on which band you fall under.

Band A: 2017/18 - £1,039.29. 2018/19 - £1,091.30
