Plans for a multi-million pound revamp of Selhurst Park have been officially submitted to Croydon Council and are now available for people to comment on.

Costing up to £100m, the Main Stand will be completely re-done to hold 13,500 people, expanding the stadium’s capacity from 26,000 to 34,000.

Now Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish is urging fans to comment online on the application to support the proposals so they can be pushed through.

He also promised that with a larger pitch as part of the plans, Selhurst Park would be eligible to host international fixtures in the future.

He said: “This huge investment in Selhurst Park will provide a major boost to the borough in so many ways, including creating hundreds of new jobs, more facilities and space for our community to gather, and give thousands more fans the chance to experience top flight football at Palace.

“Our plans will transform the matchday experience for our fans and visitors to the borough, and by extending the pitch length – we are making Selhurst Park eligible to host international football in the future.

“We are committed to working with Croydon Council to ensure our application proceeds, but now is your chance to support our bid. Please submit your comments on our proposal on the Croydon Council planning portal.”

The documents can be viewed online on the Croydon Council planning portal with the reference 18/00547/FUL.

In the design and access statement for the revamp, drawn up by architects KSS, said the club needed to expand its stadium and improve its facilities to stay financially competitive, as its capacity is lower than even many Championship clubs, including Middlesbrough, Ipswich and Wolves.

The revamped stand will expand into the car park and add a further 6,000 general admission seats and 2,000 hospitality seats.

Opened in 1924 and designed by stadium designer Archibald Leitch, the Main Stand is not listed unlike many other Leitch stadiums due to numerous modifications over the years changing the original design and look.

KSS say in their planning documents that the current Main Stand and Arthur Wait Stand have poor quality seats and views due to the columns, TV gantries and overhanging low roofs and the new design aims to rectify these problems.

Six houses will have to make way for the expanded stadium but Crystal Palace has already promised to foot the bill and re-home those whose homes are being demolished.
