Secondary schools in Richmond are ranked above the national average after the release of the latest Government figures based on GCSE results.

Their average Attainment 8 scores, a new way of calculating pupil achievement, stand at 52.7.

The scoring measures the achievement of a pupil across eight qualifications, with mathematics and English given extra weight.

In England the average Attainment 8 score was 44.6 in 2017.

Lady Eleanor Holles School came out on top with 64.2, followed closely by Waldegrave School at 62.9.

Richmond Council congratulated schools following the publication of this year’s results.

The figures showed that 76 per cent of pupils achieved a grade four or above in English and Mathematics, which is roughly equivalent to the old C grade or above.

This represents an increase of 5 percentage points since the similar measure last year and is above the national average of 64 per.

In addition, 58 per cent secured a ‘good’ pass in both subjects, achieving a grade 5 or above, the fifth highest of any local authority nationally.

Councillor Susan Chappell, cabinet member for schools, said: “This is another marker of the continued improvement in Richmond’s secondary schools, their staff and, of course, their students.

“I would like to congratulate all those receiving their results and take the opportunity to thank their families and teachers for their support in a year where we have seen new grading structures in English and Mathematics.

“It is great, yet again to see how well our schools have performed, setting firm foundations for our students’ aspiring futures.”
