An 18-year-old North Cheam teenager has won gold at an international tap dancing competition.

Holly Gibson-Barnard was one of 51 Team GB representatives who stormed the 2017 IDO World Trap Dance Championship to win eight world titles between November 28 and December 2.

The Wilkes School of Performing Arts student in Swindon was among the winning adult formation team which successfully defended its championship from last year in the huge trophy haul.

She said: “I was literally over the moon and it all happened really quickly, the presentation of it didn’t feel real because when we won everyone just went mental. It was like, ‘Oh my god, did that actually happen?’

“It was like one of them when you don’t think it’s real.

“As soon as anyone won I completely burst into tears so you can imagine what it was like when I won, I was just an absolute mess. It was amazing.”

The aspiring professional dancer said the hard work leading up to the competition, where more than 1,800 performers flocked to Riesa in Germany, ‘definitely paid off’.

Australia, Canada, and the United States were among the 19 countries represented but the United Kingdom topped the medals table in the end.

The United Kingdom was represented by Tap Attack at the IDO World Tap Dance Championships who brought home eight world titles, five silver medals and two bronzes.
