When you think of sporting success stories to come out of Croydon, you might not think of table tennis straight away.

Well maybe you should start.

Hot shot table tennis players from Whitgift School took out both the under 19 and under 11 titles at the seventh annual Jack Petchey London Schools’ Table Tennis Team Finals.

Ollie Maric-Murray, Shantosh Thevarasa, Jacky Lee, David Aboagye and Alfie Owen all enjoyed an undefeated run for the under 11 team.

For the under 19s, it wasn't just a title they picked up.

The team of James Smith, Reiss Vydelingum, George Hazell and Jason Kwok have also been invited to compete in the International School Sport Federation World Schools’ Table Tennis Championships being held in Malta in April.

Whitgift's coach Goran Maric was proud of the effort shown by the teams.

“We are thrilled to win again," he said.

"We love this competition and its tougher than some of the others we play.

"It’s fantastic for our sport and good to be playing at a higher standard.

“We start from scratch when our year 7 students come in because they haven’t played before so winning the boys under 11 trophy is great.

"We have such drive and enthusiasm through the school for table tennis.”
