A new year is now well and truly under way, so we are looking forward to lots of exciting new adventures, announcements and things to do.

Here are some of the upcoming highlights of 2018 that are already on the calendar, many of them taking place across south London:

NBA at The O2, January 11

The National Basketball Association is returning to The O2. The NBA London Game 2018 will feature the Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics playing a regular-season game on Thursday.

Lumiere London, January 18 to 21

The spotlight is set to shine on London’s West End as the iconic location takes on a new light as part of the UK’s largest light festival Lumiere London, produced by Artichoke and supported by the Mayor of London, over four free nights from January 18 to 21.

Winter Olympics, February 9 to 25

Fifty Shades Freed, February 9

The final instalment of EL James' kinky trilogy, starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson will be in cinemas by Valentine's Day.

Brit Awards at The O2, February 21

The date for the 38th Brit Awards has been announced as February 21. The show will be broadcast live on ITV from The O2. This year's event is set to feature performances from Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, Stormzy and Dua Lipa among others.

Peppa Pig is coming to London

Peppa Pig and her friends are back in a brand new live UK tour of Peppa Pig’s Adventure, featuring a new story, loads of songs and heaps of fun.

Teletubbies are coming to London

The first ever Teletubbies stage show is going on tour and is coming to a theatre near you next year. The children's TV characters are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year and their live show created especially for the youngest audience is called Big Hugs.

A royal baby is due, April 18

The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting her third child in April says Kensington Palace. Prince William and Kate currently have two children, George and Charlotte. The two announced the pregnancy in September 2017.

Another royal wedding, May 19

Unfortunately, and actually to our horror, the wedding will be held on a Saturday which means no bank holiday. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be married at St George’s Chapel, Windsor on May 19. The couple announced their engagement on November 27 to great support from the public.

Hampton Court Palace Festival, June 12 to 19

The Beach Boys, Jools Holland and Gary Barlow will be performing at this year's Hampton Court Palace Festival.

Fifa World Cup, June 14 to July 15

Football's not coming home, but maybe we'll make it to the knock-out stages in Russia?

Sail Royal Greenwich, July 4 to 8

A fleet of stunning tall ships will be on the River Thames this July. These ships have wonderful saloons, wide wooden decks, and an unbeatable atmosphere for this exclusive event in summer 2018.

Greenwich Meantime Festival, July 5 to 8

So far Steps and Il Divo will be performing with more acts to be announced soon.

Wireless Festival, July 6 to 8

This year's headliners are yet to be announced, but last year Skepta, The Weeknd and Nas were among the acts performing at Finsbury Park.

British Summer Time festival at Hyde Park, July 6 to 14

This year, the mammoth festival's headliners include Bruno Mars, Eric Clapton, Michael Buble and The Cure.

Kingston Carnival, September 3

Kingston Carnival is a celebration of the cultural diversity of the borough of Kingston.

London Jazz Festival, November 16 to 25

The EFG London Jazz Festival is the capital's biggest pan-city music festival, taking place annually in November, which has long been acclaimed for showcasing a heady mix of talent from around the world. Widely acknowledged for delivering world-class artists and emerging stars, the Festival continues to take jazz to a massive audience, in one of UK's landmark music events.
