A Wandsworth road has reopened after a gas works project prompted anger among residents and motorists.

People took to social media following the closure of Penwith Road on December 22 by SGN for ‘emergency repairs’.

Twitter user Ashley Rose said: “@wandbc @BritishGasHelp Absolutely no work being done to repair the “emergency gas works” and get Penwith Road reopened. It’s been 10 days now! What’s going on?”

British Gas replied on Twitter to say work was being carried out by National Grid and there would be an update soon.

Another user, Faye, added: “@nationalgriduk look someone needs to take responsibility for this. Today nearly witnessed multiple fights on Duntshill Road due to Penwith Road closure.

“This must be sorted ASAP.”

Alex Page posted: “Totally agree. 2.30am and 4am today was RIDICULOUS. Beeping, shouting, arguing… When people are trying to sleep!

“All because people can’t read a sign. FYI @wandbc.”

The road has been closed for nearly two weeks and the posts were made between December 31 and January 2.

Faye said she has not seen anyone there ‘in days’ and Dunsthill Road is becoming ‘hell’ with drivers trying to get into Penwith [Road] or Garratt Lane.

SGN spokesman Bradley Barlow said yesterday afternoon: “We are currently in the process of clearing up our site and the road will be reopened this evening.

"We are sorry about the inconvenience caused and thank residents and road users for their patience while essential emergency works were carried out."
