A Richmond photographer has been shortlisted in a competition that could see her win £10,000 for a charity of her choice.

Jessica Madavo, was shortlisted for Huawei and Dazed’s Reveal the Real You photography initiative after submitting a collection of images which raised awareness of women of colour proudly showing off their natural hair.

A powerful celebration of the African community, Jessica is hoping to be awarded the bursary in order to help The National Black Women’s Network continue to champion the advancements of women across all disciplines by recognising excellence and promoting leadership in the rapidly changing business world.

Over the last month, twenty young people from around the country have been using the Huawei P10 smartphone to document communities, causes and ideologies they feel passionately about, including gender equality, environmental issues, sexuality, and the impact of funding cuts in the arts.

Jessica says: “I am excited to be involved in a photography competition which allows me to raise awareness for a community which I’m both apart of and an advocate for.

“Using the Huawei P10 has equally been an exciting experience and has exceeded all expectations I previously had of phone cameras.

“The camera settings alone are comparable to highly sort after digital cameras and is amazing to use.”

Huawei is known for sourcing materials fairly, and is second only to Fairphone in the Ethical Company list.

Over the next month, a panel of judges will award three winners £10,000 each to donate to the charity of their choice, helping them to make a positive difference in their local communities.
