Aldi has revealed it could be bringing another store to town after complaints about the lack of parking at its Coulsdon site arose.

Coulsdon councillors Jeet Bains, Luke Clancy and Mario Creatura penned a joint letter to the supermarket chain which said the parking situation at the store was so bad that it blocked Brighton Road and "key access points for drivers and public transport."

"Local residents have complained bitterly about the problem of cars entering the store’s car park and creating traffic flow problems at the roundabout," the letter said.

"They are unable to speedily find a space resulting in cars backing up or stopping on the roundabout. This is having a significant impact on traffic flow through the town centre.

"The police have been involved at store level but were rebuffed by the duty manager at the time who claimed to be unaware of the problem. This we find hard to believe in view of the number of complaints we, the police and local residents’ associations have received and the clear evidence of traffic disruption."

When Aldi were contacted by the Croydon Guardian, it was revealed there are a couple of ideas in the works to deal with the traffic issue, including the construction of a new store.

An Aldi spokeswoman said: “We are aware of the challenges with the Coulsdon car park and have previously tried to address these by introducing a time limit to encourage fair usage.

"If there was enough support for this proposal we would consider submitting another planning application to that effect.

“In the meantime we are also exploring the possibility of another store in the local area to further meet demand from shoppers.”

When asked to elaborate on the possibility of another store, the spokeswoman said there were no further details at the moment.
