Construction of a 68-storey skyscraper in Croydon has gotten the go-ahead from Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.

Croydon Council had already unanimously approved the One Lansdowne development, which will feature twin towers of 68 and 41 storeys.

All that was needed was for Mr Khan to sign off the Section 106 and then formal consent could be given.

Guildhouse UK is developing the scheme and the company's chief executive, David Hudson, said: “Peaking at 288 metres high, One Lansdowne will be visible from Piccadilly to Brighton, and will be a world-class building which really puts Croydon on the map.”

As well as 794 homes the building swill feature a swimming pool, gym, public viewing gallery and the highest bar and restaurant facilities in London.

“We are grateful for the trust being placed in us both by the London Borough of Croydon and the Greater London Authority to deliver this scheme,” Mr Hudson said.

“The great challenge for Croydon has always been to change perceptions in its own right and this will help the town to put the town on the map.”

The towers will be built opposite the new £1.4billion Westfield that was also approved for construction earlier this month.

Chairman of Develop Croydon, Richard Plant, was excited by the news.

"To have such exciting architecture from a real visionary like Piers Gough featuring in a landmark development that will be seen for miles around is a real coup for Croydon," he said.

“Guildhouse Rosepride spotted the unique location between East Croydon station and the Whitgift Centre, where Westfield and Hammerson’s new £1.4billion will stand, and it will be great to see the potential of this site maximised in such a way.

“The One Lansdowne development will provide a remarkable centrepiece for the regeneration of Croydon.”

Works will begin in 2018.
