The front counter at the police station in Windmill Road will close.

The counter will shut in December this year, with Croydon MPS saying the site received less than six visits per day.

The suite will remain open as an operational building however.

Croydon MPS tweeted: "Windmill Road Custody Suite in Croydon will remain open as an operational building but the front counter will close in December 2017.

"It may take longer to travel to the 24/7 front counter at Croydon Police Station, so local officers will host an extra weekly community meeting.

"Windmill Road Custody Suite receives a small number of visits – less than six on an average day, compared to 44 a day at Croydon Police Station."

The front counter will remain open at Croydon Police action.

People disgruntled with the decision went to social media to voice their displeasure.

One man tweeted: "Disgraceful decision; yet more evidence of the Met distancing themselves from Londoners and yes I'm fully aware of the historic and looming cuts."

A report from London Mayor's Office, released on October 30, said that police officer numbers in the capital could drop below 27,500 by 2021 – the lowest total since 2002 - due to continued cuts.

That would be a 26 per cent fall in the number officers per head of population since 2010.

Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said: "I fully share the mayor's commitment to keeping Londoners safe, and the men and women of the Met work tirelessly to deliver that commitment.

"I am confident that these changes will not impact on our ability to deliver this.

"We know that the ways in which the public want to contact us have changed, so we absoltuely must transform, focusing on serving the public as best we can.

"The most effective place for our officers to be is out on the streets. Be that on patrol responding to the public, proactiely out tackling crime on operations or in their communities forging stronger, better links gaining vital local information."
