A team of medical staff at St George’s Hospital recently performed the first robotic hysterectomy at the trust.

Thomas Ind led the hour-long procedure with a team of eight people using the Da Vinci Robot SI to complete it.

The machinery aims to reduce human error, such as a surgeon’s natural tremor, and means the patient has a shorter length of stay in hospital while returning to normal activity at a faster rate with fewer issues.

Mr Ind is said to be the first to have brought it to the hospital following its success at other trusts, and has performed more than 500 of them in the last ten years.

He said: “It’s great that we have these facilities available to us to reduce the length of time operations take as well as give us more flexibility during surgery.

“I am very proud to have led the first robotic hysterectomy at St George’s with the hard work of the team too.”

The surgery was a success and the patient recovered well.

Thomas is the president of the British and Irish Association of Gynaecological Surgeons and secretary of the society of European Robotic Gynaecological Surgeons.

The surgery was performed earlier last month.
