Fire engines were called to a shop in Caterham on Monday after a fire broke out.
People walking by Carphone Warehouse on Station Avenue reported smelling smoke and seeing a "fan pumping fresh air into the shop"
A Surrey Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "We received a call at around 10.50am on Monday (October 30) to a report of a fire at a property in Station Avenue, Caterham.
"Three fire engines from Godstone, Salfords and Epsom were sent, and discovered a small fire in the basement of the property.
"We left the scene at around 12.10pm."
